Listening Assignment No. 7

Welcome to a new term of Listening Assignments!  This week we're looking at the legendary British rock band, the Beatles.  They became the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts of all time.  This week we are listening to Twist and Shout.  This song was actually a cover for the Beatles.  It was released on their first album Please, Please Me and went up to number 2 on the US Pop Chart.  It never reached number 1 as it was released during at time when the top 5 positions on the chart were all Beatles songs.


Please listen to the track and answer the following questions. You can answer these questions by posting in the comments section of the post, by e-mailing me at aguilmette@wsd1.org or by writing them down and giving me your responses in class.

    4. This song reminds me of those game shows on T.V. then they go onto commercial.
    5.a)Yes, I like this song.
    b)I like the song because it reminds me of my favourite T.V. shows because it catches you when your not in attention and even though the lyrics mostly repeat, the melody keeps the song strong.

    4. This song reminds me of something you would listen to if you go on a road trip with friends or family. It has an upbeat to it so you won't get bored easily.
    5. a) No, I don't like this song.
    5. b) I don't like this song because the lyrics don't catch my attention, or in other words it doesn't give me any meaning. The sound of song sounds too retro and the beat doesn't suit the song. The tempo and how they sung it, to me I think they should sing it faster because it would sound better.

    4. This song makes me imagine old people, in their late 40's maybe even early 50's, dancing awkwardly to the song. My aunt used to do that when I'd play Beatles Rock Band with my other cousins. Oh, how embarrassing.

    3. Small group, because i'm guessing only the members of the band sang the song and there are only 4 of them.
    4. It reminds me of the songs they would play in the intro or in the background of a retro-themed film. Maybe like a party in the 1950's or a day at home listening to the radio.
    5a) I really like the Beatles, so yes!
    5b) I love how the song sounded grainy throughout the whole thing. It made it sound more old, which is a good thing. The tempo is fast and easy going and the vocals are really nice :)

    4. This song reminds me of those older television shows and those beach parties people would throw back in the day. It reminds me of a laid back sort of atmosphere, where you can just sit back, relax and enjoy whatever it may be.

    5b) I like this song because as I said, it has a very laid back sound to it. I felt that the bass really added something I can't quite put my finger on. It was the rhythm that won me over though, well composed.
